De-Gen by D.C. Mathes

Ten year-old amateur astronomer Alice Rogers returns from school one day to her mother lying dead on the floor of their New York home.

With nowhere else to go, young Alice sets off across the country in search of her uncle Ian, her only living relative, and the unofficial leader of the Free City of Denver.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the country, a man named Nicholas Arquette begins to realize that his memories of the recent past are nowhere near complete. As Nick tries to piece together his past life and is drawn into a story of corporate espionage that fingers him as a traitor to the United States of America, ten-year-old Alice, now very alone and very frightened, becomes the target of violent discrimination.

Alice is psychic, and there are prices for such gifts.

Eloquent story telling

Are you sure you're not a famous author in the witness protection program or something? Read the first few chapters last night. Wow! Your story draws me in immediately with suspense, purposeful description and eloquent story telling. Quite impressed so far! Thanks for sharing!

Grabs you from the very first line

De-Gen is a book that grabs you from the very first line and keeps the action and intrigue constant. It does a great job of building your interest in the two main characters. Often times I’m hesitant about novels with dual narratives since one story inevitably is more interesting than the other. But in De-Gen the two plot lines are equally intense while each being very unique, building all the more suspense while you wait to see how they’re related. And this isn’t even to mention the future post war government controlled United States setting which provides a backdrop that is incredibly intriguing in its own right.

De-Gen's characters and story take hold from the start

Set in a bleak not-so-far-away future, De-Gen's characters and story take hold from the start. Dancing between an adrenaline packed conspiracy and a tortured world through the eyes of an innocent twelve year old girl, every new development just kept me more excited to keep on reading. The world that Mr. Mathes creates is a living, breathing one that is terrifyingly easy to imagine as our reality and he fills it with characters so real that I can't help but cheer and cry for them. Mr. Mathes' story started simply enough but left me wanting much, much more. I cannot wait for his next novel!

This story had me hooked from page 1

Just finished De-Gen 2 weeks ago and I was totally blown away! First novel completed by this guy and he was sittin' on it for a decade and I'm like WHAT? This story had me hooked from page 1. I was amazed at the complexity of the story which, at the same time, reads fluidly at a fast pace simply because the descriptive parts are just as interesting and easy to imagine as you read the story as the dialogue between the characters. There's raw emotion and at the same time cold mechanical detachment more and more common in our world. The places listed in the novel aren't mentioned simply for the sake of making the story sound more interesting, as the author actually lived in all those places and all the minute detail input is totally accurate. Looking forward to more coming from Duane Mathes !!!

Amazing futuristic science fiction thriller

I strongly recommend reading this. This is an amazing futuristic science fiction thriller. From body enhancing chemicals to flying cars and trains this book easily captivated me. I found it hard put it down. The author's words played great with my imagination, I could envision the book as a movie. 10/10 I look forward to reading more from the author.
